DIAGNOSIS, MAINTENANCE, PLANNING, CONTROL AND MODELING OF PROCESSES OF THE DISTRIBUTED SMART FACTORY, ACCORDING TO THE INDUSTRY 4.0 PARADIGMS: THE FID-U4E PROJECT IS STARTED WITH THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE BIOROBOTICS INSTITUTE AND FUNDED UNDER THE POR FESR TOSCANA 2014-2020

The idea behind the FID-U4E project (acronym for Fabbrica Intelligente Diffusa – Unity 4 Efficiency) is to develop an innovative “universal” Cloud platform, based on a microservices architecture, whose peripheral input nodes are intelligent smart cards that collect data from sensor networks and integrated control systems describing the status of machines and processes.

Within the Cloud platform will reside a hidden layer learning system (Artificial Intelligence), which will have to support the functions of formalization of knowledge, pattern recognition and development of optimal solutions. The proposed solution creates the conditions for a distributed expert system capable of interfacing in a capillary manner with the critical sectors of industrial processes.

This expert system, in perspective, will be able to be trained through various use cases aimed at increasing efficiency, also with the introduction of innovative robots. The ultimate intent is to create a Distributed Smart Factory based on Industry 4.0 concepts of connected companies, with direct benefits in terms of products that can be industrialized and integrated into Smart Factory projects.

The project, funded under the POR FESR TUSCANY 2014-2020 and lasting two years, brings together the excellence in the field of Tuscan research and industry, including the Institute of BioRobotics of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies with the group of research coordinated by Paolo Dario: a consortium of high technological innovation made up of six partners which aims to concretely solve some critical points of the productive fabric of Tuscany, such as diagnosis, maintenance, planning, control and modeling of processes, and control of the finished product.

With the intention of pursuing an increase in efficiency, the project intends to solve real problems encountered in the processes of industrial realities of very different and diversified dimensions (primary technological, auxiliary and infrastructural support, in the sectors of mechanics and energy recovery from waste ).

The new tools, compatible with a multiplicity of other processes, will be reliable, open and easy to implement, because they are based on models of formalization of the description of the processes. They will also allow small businesses at different levels of verticalization to be able to connect with limited investments, both among themselves and with their clients (including large companies), without necessarily requiring monolithic enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, unattainable for management costs and complexity for many small businesses.

The partners of the FID-U4E project are: Diakont, project leader, Institute of BioRobotica, Cafel, Phoops, Roggi and Sintecnica.
